3FN is shut down by FTC
Category : General 22 May 2010 11:53 AM | Industry News
If the name 3FN sounds familiar, it is because the FTC accused it in June 2009 of recruiting and collaborating with criminals to distribute malware and pornography. The FTC alleged that 3FN shielded cyber-criminals by ignoring take-down requests from the online security community and shifting criminal elements to other IP addresses it controlled to evade detection.
The FTC said that more than 4,500 malicious software programs were controlled by servers hosted by 3FN, including software capable of keystroke logging, password stealing and data theft.
3FN operated under a number of aliases including Pricewert LLC, 3FN.net, Triple Fiber Network, APS Telecom and APX Telecom. Harmful electronic content distributed by 3FN included spyware, viruses, Trojans, phishing schemes, botnet command-and-control services and pornography.
3FN's servers and other assets have been seized and will be sold, and the company's been ordered to turn over $1.08 million to the FTC.
The court has now permanently barred 3FN from engaging in its usual activities, as well as its partners and agents. The court has also appointed a receiver to liquidate 3FN's assets, which will no doubt go towards paying their debt to the FTC.
