In May Google launched an encrypted version of its Web search, allowing users to enable a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection to encrypt their information as they searched.
Another reason for this move is that if the schools block access to, it also blocks the use of other services such as Google's Apps for Education - which many institutions offer for their students and staff.
Google's change should make it easier for school IT staff to comply with the Children's Internet Protection Act, which requires schools to implement measures to address minors accessing "inappropriate matter," among other things
