Important Update – Transition to New Microsoft Teams by July 1, 2025

Microsoft has announced that the classic version of Microsoft Teams for Mac and Windows desktops (including VDI environments) will no longer be available after July 1, 2025. To ensure uninterrupted access to Teams, you must transition to the new Teams client or use Teams on the web before this date.

Why This Matters

The new Microsoft Teams client offers improved performance, enhanced features, and better security. After July 1, 2025, the classic Teams app will stop working, potentially disrupting your collaboration and communication.

What You Need to Do?

Upgrade to the New Teams Client:

  • Open Microsoft Teams and look for a prompt to switch to the new version. Follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade.
  • If you don’t see the prompt, download the new Teams client from the Microsoft Teams website.
  • Ensure your device meets the requirements: Windows 10 version 19041 or later, macOS 11 Big Sur or later.

Use Teams on the Web:

  • If you’re unable to upgrade (e.g., using an unsupported operating system like Windows 10 LTSC), access Teams via a modern web browser at teams.microsoft.com.
  • The web version provides nearly all the functionality of the desktop app.

Check Your Status:

If you’re unsure which version you’re using, check the Teams app:

  • Classic Teams: Look for a toggle option to “Try the new Teams” at the top of the app.
  • New Teams: The app icon is labeled “Microsoft Teams (new)” or “ms-teams.exe” in Task Manager.

Key Dates

  • Now: Start transitioning to the new Teams client or web version.
  • July 1, 2025: Classic Teams will be unavailable on Mac, Windows, and VDI environments.
